Rosa’s Covid-19 Response Fund for Women’s Organisations

The aim of the Covid-19 Emergency Response Fund was to help organisations adapt their services to meet the increased needs of women and girls during Covid-19. We focused on giving grants to small, specialist organisations that often fall under the radar of national funds.

Rosa understood the pandemic would have a devastating impact on women and girls. We also acknowledged the threat posed to specialist women’s and girls’ organisations who already do so much with very small pots of funding. Our joint survey with Women’s Resource Centre and Women’s Fund Scotland found that 55% of organisations led ‘by and for’ Black and minoritised women were worried about surviving the crisis.

These organisations are often supporting women with a range of issues impacting their lives. Some of the issues they deal with include work and employment, poverty and destitution, insecure housing, mental and physical health, isolation and poor access to services.

Our impact report picks up key themes and issues raised by these funded organisations. Visit our Covid-19 impact page for interviews and insights into the organisations we funded.

Covid-19 poses a real threat to the sustainability and survival of women’s organisations. Our report with Women’s Resource Centre and Women’s Fund Scotland found 70% of these already under-funded services fear for their future – around 37% were those led ‘by and for’ Black and minoritised women.

These organisations were in a weaker position from the outset, and are now experiencing particularly high demand due to the disproportionate impact of Covid-19 on Black and minoritised women and girls.

Insecure funding was mentioned by many as a major challenge in keeping their organisation afloat. Respondents repeatedly reported significant losses in income while experiencing a steep increase in demand for their services.

Rosa funds non-profitable women’s and girls’ organisations. Rosa defines women’s and girls’ organisations as those which are run by, for and with women and girls. This means that your organisation will be governed and led by women. It will have a Board of Trustees (or similar) where the Chair is a woman and the majority of members are women. The majority of your organisation’s employee leadership team will be women. Your organisation will have the principle objective of working with women and/or girls and the majority of your organisation’s beneficiaries are, and will always be, women and/or girls.
