The Stand With Us fund

Reclaim These Streets started as a group of women who wanted to channel the collective grief, outrage and sadness after the murder of Sarah Everard in March 2021. When they were forced to cancel a planned vigil at Clapham Common, the group set about launching a fundraiser to support women’s causes across the UK.

Reclaim These Streets’ efforts proved that when we unite and get active, we can do something about the harassment, intimidation and violence happening every day to women all over the UK and beyond.

Now we’re using the money donated to fund frontline organisations supporting women and girls whose lives have been devastated by male violence.

More about the Stand With Us fund…

We have worked with an Advisory Group comprised of two Rosa Trustees, five VAWG experts from across the UK as well as two representatives of Reclaim These Streets, to determine the parameters of the Stand With Us fund. The Advisory Group developed and agreed the details of the fund, including the type of organisations the fund will support; the aim and priorities of the fund, and how much organisations can apply for. The recommendations made by the Advisory Group were considered and approved unanimously by Rosa’s Board of Trustees.

Following a series of formal assessments, a decision panel, chaired by a Rosa Trustee, has selected 25 organisations to award grants of up to £25,000 from the Stand With Us fund.

The special Advisory Group helping to inform the grant-making process include the following members:

  • Jackie May from The Women’s Centre Cornwall
  • Girijamba Polubothu from Shakti Women’s Aid (Edinburgh)
  • Sarah Mason from Women’s Aid Federation Northern Ireland (Belfast)
  • Gurpreet Virdee from Women and Girls Network (West London)
  • Jacqui Fray and Beverley Williams from Amadudu (Liverpool)
  • Jamie Klingler and Ludo Orlando from Reclaim These Streets

Frequently asked questions

1. How will Rosa decide which organisations will receive money donated to the fund?

We give unrestricted, core, project-based and organisational development grants to specialist women’s and girls’ organisations across the UK. The focus for this fund is to support frontline organisations run by, for and with women who are standing up, taking action and doing amazing work to help women and girls whose lives have been devastated by male violence. We have asked organisations run by, for and with women who are seeking to make a difference in this area to apply for grants. A panel of experts will judge those applications before the organisations are awarded funding.

2. How quickly will the funds reach the organisations who need them?

Our aim is for this fund to make the biggest difference possible in terms of supporting women to tackle male violence, so we will seek out those organisations we believe will do so, as well as inviting bids from others. We will also seek out organisations working with women who are too often underrepresented or disproportionately affected by male violence. The fund is now open, and we hope to make the first grants available by Autumn 2022.

3. How much of the money donated will Rosa take to manage the distribution?

We are a very small organisation with 7 members of staff. We use the funds we receive very carefully to make sure we get as much of the money in the hands of the women’s and girls’ organisations we support. Each fund has a different focus and requires specific support and management from our team, but we generally aim to award approximately 80%-85% of all funds in grants to eligible organisations.

4. How will Rosa ensure the money goes to organisations that support women from a range of different backgrounds and communities?

Rosa has over a decade of experience investing in the UK women’s and girls’ sector. Our approach has always been to bring together a panel of experts who will judge those applications before the organisations are awarded funding. As with all our grantmaking, this panel is made up of women from a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences working alongside Rosa Trustees. One of the key priorities for the fund will be supporting projects that help women and girls from underrepresented groups, areas of deprivation across the UK and those disproportionately affected by male violence.

5. How can Rosa ensure that the organisations that receive funds will spend it in the right way?

We have a strong track record of carefully evaluating each bid we receive and closely monitoring and evaluating the impact of the grants we award, and we will use the same approach with this fund as we have used successfully with our other funds.

6. How will Rosa measure and communicate the impact of funds given to organisations?

As with all our funds, we list each grant that we make on our grants map. We will produce a report on the impact of the fund and the difference it has made once all the funded programmes are complete. We will regularly publish updates on individual grantees throughout the lifetime of the fund and the area of work the funding supports. You can keep up to date with our work by signing up to our newsletter.

7. Are Reclaim These Streets still involved in the fund and if so, how?

Reclaim These Streets are incredibly supportive of what we are seeking to do with the fund. Two of their founders have been helping us shape this fund and they will also be part of the decision making panel that will determine which applications are successful.

8. Why is Rosa funding organisational development?

The purpose of the funding was agreed through consultation with an Advisory Group of VAWG sector experts. Rosa understands that many organisations have been fire-fighting through the pandemic, responding to a huge increase in demand for their services, which leaves them without time to strategically plan and secure their long term futures. Investing in organisational development will make VAWG organisations stronger and more resilient, leading to potentially more stable leadership structures; this, in turn, will make them better able to support women and girls who are the survivors of violence.

9. Will the fund support trans and non-binary people?

Rosa believes that women’s and girls’ organisations are experts in what they do. We fund organisations that work with and for trans and non-binary people and those that don’t – we trust organisations to do what best serves the communities they work with and for. Rosa is proud of our record of funding hundreds of women’s and girls’ organisations across the UK which represent women’s and girls’ lived experience and diverse views.
