“At Rosa, we fund campaigning work because we believe it’s really important to invest in women-led, women’s and girls’ organisations to drive change. These women and girls bring lived experience, deep knowledge, and unmatched expertise. And as our new impact report shows, they use them powerfully to drive social change”.
– Rebecca Gill, Rosa CEO

Why fund women’s and girls’ campaigning

Rosa’s new report Where lasting change begins analyses the first ten years of Voices from the Frontline, celebrating its impact and drawing out lessons for funders and campaigners.

Across the first six rounds, the organisations funded through the programme have contributed to nine significant law and policy changes. These include the decriminalisation of abortion in Northern Ireland, a ban on virginity testing and hymenoplasty across the UK, new flexible working rights in England, Scotland and Wales, and Wales’s first 10-year Women’s Health Plan. Taken together, those changes alone have affected at least 13 million women and girls across the four nations.

9 policy and legal changes affecting 13 million women and girls

For example, Karma Nirvana successfully campaigned for a statutory definition of Honour Based Abuse in UK legislation. Fair Treatment for the Women of Wales won a commitment to a specialist endometriosis nurse in every Welsh Health Board, and the creation of Wales’ first Women’s Health Plan.

“Funding that supports campaigning and influencing can create systemic change, not just helping someone today but changing the landscape so that fewer people face the same situation in the future. That is where the longevity of real change happens.”
– Natasha Rattu, Executive Director, Karma Nirvana

But policy and legal change are not the only measure of impact. The report also looks at the many ways that campaigning by women’s and girls’ organisations builds community and supports women and girls to speak up. The huge power and potential of investing in women’s and girls’ campaigning is clear. The return, in impact, of a small investment can be immense.

“Many funders support direct services for individuals, but relatively few enable organisations to address the systems and structures that create inequalities in the first place.”
